Hero – that’s a word that covers so many bases!! We can have true heroes, the fantastic, the brave, no thought to their own safety, for the benefit of others. The dreamy variety based on love and emotions ‘my hero!!!’. A hero of business turning the impossible to success. A local hero where you have 15 minutes of fame. Dads think they are heroes for even the simplest of tasks – almost any menial task is eh, heroic?

Being a hero therefore is bestowed upon you and subjective in the extreme.
Sporting heroes, what's different?
Sporting heroes though, in my view, are a whole different category. Although you may be dubbed a hero for scoring a winning goal in a cup final or holing a crucial putt, the sporting variety tend to be for those who have built an enduring reputation over time with a charisma, a determination or personality which captures the imagination.
To be a sporting hero tends to come with the advocacy of many – large parts of the population who agree and even those who are not sports enthusiasts will endorse. Its more than a sporting ‘great’ of which there are many, this is the level where an ingredient beyond greatness creates a pedestal for the few.
A tribute
This blog will in its infancy be a self-indulgent description of those in sport whom I place at the very peak of my admiration – in many ways my tribute to them given the excitement, the inspiration and indeed the ‘moments’ they have delivered along the way. I do not have one definition – I have several and as you see the list as its grows there is diversity mixed with consistency.
However, it is no surprise that so many sporting heroes and analogies are used in business. Our heroes display qualities, often leadership qualities which we can relate to, to follow and even aspire to. Reflections on these qualities are as enthralling as describing their achievements.
What do I ask of you?
Nothing (well maybe not to remark on my lack of prose or grammatical inconsistencies). Just read.
What would I love of you?
Lots. I would love to hear your views on those that I write about, your perspectives, even your debates that would challenge my thinking. It may even alter my thought’s but that’s not really the objective!!
What more??
Share with me and hopefully many others your sporting heroes and start a conversation which if nothing else will be entertaining for you as you type!! Provide me with your story and I will share it with all.
Widen the pool to bring in any sport - one of my friends would talk of baseball, of the St Louis Cardinals, of Albert Puhols. Another will cite Nadia Comaneci, the first ever gymnast to score the perfect 10 at an Olympic games. One will convince us of Alex Ovechkin of Ice Hockey fame and the Washington Capitals. It’s the story that will count.
My mind and yours I hope are here to be broadened all around a simple but classic connection.
Sporting Heroes.
